Rubber and plastic materials encompass a wide range of polymers, including thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) like TPS, TPU, TPEE, TPAE, TPO, and thermoplastics such as PE, PP, ABS, PC, PA, and more. While individual rubber or plastic materials may excel in certain properties, they often lack a balance of comprehensive performance. Through blending modification, these materials can be optimized to enhance specific properties, creating cost-effective, multifunctional compounds.

Blending modification typically involves mixing base materials but may also include the addition of functional additives to meet targeted application requirements. This article summarizes the common types of rubber and plastic blending systems and their modification effects.

1. TPS Blends (Styrenic Thermoplastic Elastomers)

Common Types: SBS, SEBS, SIS, SEPS, SEEPS

  • SBS/LDPE: Improves flowability, hardness, and tear resistance.

  • SBS/PS: Enhances flow, tensile strength, and rigidity.

  • SBS/PVC: Poor compatibility; CPE, EVA, or NBR additives improve blending, hardness, and abrasion resistance.

  • SEBS/PP: Excellent compatibility; forms interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN), improving hardness and tensile strength.

  • SEBS/HDPE: Moderate compatibility; enhances tensile and tear resistance.

  • SEBS/TPV: Enhances SEBS elasticity, aging resistance, and TPV processability.

  • SEBS/TPU: Requires compatibilizer; improves TPU’s hand feel and SEBS’s strength. Suitable for ABS/PC overmolding.

2. TPU Blends (Thermoplastic Polyurethane)

  • TPU/ABS: Good compatibility; improves mechanical properties, processability, and tear strength.

  • TPU/PVC: Enhances processing, reduces friction, and improves flame resistance.

  • TPU/PP: Poor compatibility; grafting agents are necessary.

  • TPU/PA (Nylon): Typically PA12; requires compatibilizers to improve compatibility and mechanical properties.

  • TPU/PC or TPU/POM: Enhances melt flow and solvent resistance, especially with POM.

3. TPEE Blends

  • TPEE/TPU: Improves elongation at break and cost performance.

4. Other Common Blends

  • PP/POE or PP/EPDM (physical blending)

  • PP/EPDM (dynamic vulcanization) → referred to as TPV

  • PA/NBR, PVC/NBR (dynamic cross-linking)

Note:

  • TPE typically refers to SEBS/PP blends.

  • TPR refers to SBS/PS blends.

  • Both have excellent compatibility without the need for grafting agents.

  • TPV refers to dynamically vulcanized PP/EPDM.

Common Equipment for Rubber-Plastic Blending

Twin-screw extruder strand pelletizing lines are used for plastic-TPE blending.

Open mill or internal mixers are typically used for rubber mixing and cross-linking.

These setups are essential for achieving high-efficiency, scalable, and consistent compounding results.
