Application and development prospect of bio-based materials

   

What is bio-based material?

bio-based materials are made from the renewable biomass, such as grains, legumes, stalks, bamboo and wood powders, to obtain bio-polymer materials or monomers through biotransformation, and then to form polymeric materials.

Biomass materials, including bio-alcohols, organic acids, alkanes, olefins, and other basic bio-chemicals, made by bio-synthetic, biological processing, bio-refining process; and plastic material, such as bioplastics, bio-fiber, sugar engineering products, bio-based rubber, made by biomass thermoplastic processing.

 

Application of bio-based materials

The application of bio-based materials is varied. The widely used packaging materials, disposable daily necessities, etc., in our daily life, all can be made from bio-based material. Also, bio-based materials can be used in biomedical materials as well as high value-added drug-controlled release materials and bone fixation materials.

 

Bio-based Plastic

As one of the largest varieties of biomaterials, bioplastics can be divided into two types, biodegradable and non-biodegradable. Biodegradable bio-based plastics including polylactic acid, poly-hydroxy-alkyl acid ester, carbon dioxide copolymer, dicarboxylic acid diol copolyester, polyvinyl alcohol, and others. Non-biodegradable bio-based plastics including polyethylene, nylon, polyurethane and so on.
Because its production process is pollution-free, biodegradable, biodegradable biomaterials are the ideal green polymer material! The following is a brief introduction to several biodegradable bioplastic.


Polylactic acid (PLA)

Polylactic acid, also known as poly-lactide, is a polymer of lactic acid as the main raw material, mainly corn, cassava and other raw materials. Polylactic acid has a good thermal stability, solvent resistance, can be processed in a variety of ways. Products made from polylactic acid in addition to biodegradable, but also has good biocompatibility, gloss, transparency, feel and heat resistance, and has a certain resistance to bacteria, flame-retardant and ultraviolet resistance. Its usage is very wide, can be used as packaging materials, fiber and nonwovens, etc., currently mainly used in clothing (underwear, outerwear), industry (construction, agriculture, forestry, paper) and medical and health fields.

Poly hydroxy fatty acid ester (PHA)

Poly-hydroxy fatty acid ester is a kind of intracellular polyester synthesized by many bacteria, it has good biodegradability, biocompatibility, optical activity, piezoelectricity, gas separation property and so on. Poly-hydroxy fatty acid esters can be used in biodegradable packaging materials, tissue engineering materials, slow-release materials, electrical materials and medical materials, but at the same time it also has higher production costs.

 

Poly-Lactone (PLC)

The poly-hexyl ester is a polymerization-type polyester, which is formed by the open loop polymerization under the condition of the ε-of the metal organic compound (eg.). PCL possesses good biocompatibility, biodegradability, solvent solubility, high crystallinity and low melting point. The application field is very broad, including controlled release drug carrier, cell, tissue culture media frame, fully degradable plastic surgical suture, high strength film filamentous molding, plastic low-temperature impact performance modifier and plasticizer, medical modelling materials, industry, fine arts modelling materials, toys, organic coloring agent, Jes ink adhesion agent, hot melt adhesive, etc.

 

The prospect of bio-based materials

In today's "low-carbon economy" environment, the development of biomaterials are very optimistic.

Compared with oil-based materials, bio-based materials are mainly derived from plants, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and dependence on oil, while its production process is greener and in line with people's pursuit of environmental protection. Because of its environment-friendly and resource-saving characteristics, biomaterials will gradually become a new industry leading the world economy development and scientific and technological innovation.
