ABS is a copolymer of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene with high impact property, easy processing, good handle and easy electroplating. The blend of PVC and ABS can combine the advantages of the two and become a new type of material with wide application in electric housing, electrical components, automobile dashboard, textile equipment, luggage and so on.
ABS can be used as toughening modifier of rigid PVC, and the processing fluidity is improved obviously. Due to the moderate compatibility between PVC and ABS, compatibilizers such as CPE,SAN should be added in the blend.
The impact strength of ABS/PVC blends can be improved by adding compatibilizer CPE. In addition, because ABS contains unsaturated double bonds, its thermal stability and oxygen resistance are low, so it is necessary to add antioxidant in addition to thermal stabilizer in the formulation.
The flame retardancy of ABS can also be improved by blending ABS with PVC. This property makes the ABS/PVC blend suitable for manufacturing electrical housing and components, and can avoid the deterioration of performance caused by the addition of small molecular flame retardants and the shortcomings of precipitating auxiliaries.
Suitable plasticizer can also be added into the PVC/ABS blend system to make semi-hard products, which can be used in the manufacture of automobile dashboard.
