Although the recycled plastics industry is widely regarded as a key solution to plastic pollution and an essential driver of the circular economy, its real-world application faces significant barriers. In high-standard sectors such as automotive and electronics, these challenges have led to a situation where recycled plastics are “praised but not widely adopted.”
The main reasons include:
1. High Costs and Poor Economic Viability
The production of recycled plastic involves expensive collection, sorting, and processing—costs that often surpass those of virgin plastic. Additionally, falling prices of virgin plastics in recent years have made recycled alternatives less competitive.
2. Inadequate Policy Support and Standard Systems
Firstly, there is a lack of mandatory regulations and effective incentives. Although initiatives such as the EU’s Plastics Strategy and China’s Dual Carbon Goals exist, the implementation lacks enforceable measures. Secondly, certification and standardization lag behind. China lacks unified standards for recycled plastics, while international exports face certification barriers. Moreover, low-value plastic waste still lacks sorting and recycling systems, resulting in inefficient recovery.
3. Technical Limitations and Weak Recycling Infrastructure
Mechanical recycling remains the mainstream method but struggles with low-value plastics. While chemical recycling shows promise in addressing this issue, it involves complex technologies and high investment, with most projects still in the pilot phase. Additionally, recycling networks in countries like China are fragmented and informal, leading to high sorting costs and a shortage of high-quality recycled materials.
4. Market Demand and Supply Chain Mismatch
Downstream demand is weak, and industry coordination is lacking. While brands often pledge to use more recycled materials, actual purchasing is limited by high costs.
5. Limited Public Awareness and Consumer Habits
There is a disconnect between environmental awareness and consumer behavior. Although green concepts are gaining attention, recycled plastic products are often priced like “luxury goods,” pushing consumers toward cheaper conventional plastics.
So, how can this dilemma be resolved?
Looking ahead, breakthroughs will depend on a mix of mandatory policies (such as setting minimum recycled content ratios), technological innovation (scaling up chemical recycling), supply chain integration (building closed-loop systems), and consumer incentives (such as carbon labeling). These measures are essential to shift recycled plastics from being a “conceptual trend” to a “market trend.”
